And here's my final project render for modeling! I'm not really super happy with the poses and stuff, but I do kind of like how the one figure is looking at the viewer.

I'm not incredibly happy with the pose, and unfortunately that's whats prolly getting rapid prototyped. Buuuut its due Thursday and LOLSOISEVERYTHINGELSE.

I'm thinking for my final project I'll do a whole bunch of these in a museum setting. A museum... OF THE FUTURE. A horrible... messed up future where classical sculptures are replaced with mutant sculptures? :)

Right now I'm trying to make a couple models of figures (this is the female version) so I can fool around with posing them and combining them to make a neat rapid prototype. Speaking of, I have zero of my work up which deals with my main focus right now. I'll get on that eventually.

I threw on some weird bump map texture for kicks. The model's not done, I need to attach all the parts and smooth out the edges. So, right now its got a kinda neat doll-joint look to it. (The feet were excluded in the image because OHGOD they were bad and catching the light really weird.)

Turned out way better than my self-portrait yesterday, reallllly hoping that's a result of me painting more recently and not that I just suck at painting from life. D: It still wasn't a GREAT likeness either, I tend to make facial features smaller than they should be. Sadness. :(

Brush experiment

Made some of my own brushes in Photoshop today! Here's an experiment I did using them: first I created a pretty abstract pattern, then I went through with a regular brush and gave it some variation in value to create some sort of rock formation. Although it looks a bit cellular?

Here's a picture of the brushes themselves, its amazing the different brushstrokes and textures you get with some objects. Like the car windows/light made a really neat jaggedy/technological pattern. The snow and rocks made a GREAT dirt and rock texture (maybe unsurprisingly).

It's sad, but I think collecting pictures and making brushes from them fulfills some residual Pokemon, "gotta catch 'em all" mentality left over from childhood. Not that I've really grown up... SHHH.

3D Modeling

Here's a model I made for my modeling class (Woah. Crazy. A model for modeling class?!). The assignment was to create a machinic diatom. I have no clue what that is, but I gathered it was a nanomachine of some kind. Not sure I captured that whole machine objective, but I tried to make an artificial platelet that could be introduced into people's bloodstreams who have ITP.

The canopy would provide the functionality of a platelet, allowing it to stick to other platelets, create clots, stop bleeding: all that jazz. The main body would hold certain proteins on its shell; if all the proteins are removed the platelet will stop reproducing. These proteins would be attracted by the flagellum of the other artificial platelets thus, if too large a number of platelets become present in the bloodstream, most of them will stop reproducing, thus limiting their numbers to prevent unwanted clots.

I still haven't figured out how the body won't attack them... but hey, I'm an artist not a doctor, Jim?

Anyway long explanation aside: 3D modeling is crazy fun and I need to get better at it.

First official art for my comic! :) Ok... maybe less than official because it says Derp instead of the title. The title that I have TOTALLY COME UP WITH. And am NOT having a hard time coming up with.

There are some problems with anatomy and the lighting and stuff, but overall I'm kind of excited about how it looks! And definitely excited about using lots and lots of bright rainbow-y colors! :D

Also this is the main character, but the only thing really locked down design-wise is her hairstyle haha. I can't decide on the face, age, or anything.

Just gotta start writing official script, come up with a title, and find a domain, build a website and we're in business! :)

Here are a couple neck studies (of me! because I am the most readily available model. and I have pokey neck tendons, its pretty sweet.) The first one was pretty bad, probably because I was just warming up. I need to start visualizing in 3d when I do these :\
And random flickr portrait of somebody's grandpa. It feels like I spent forever on this, but I think it was only an hour and a half or something. I wanted to do him justice because he looks like a nice grandpa :) He looks a little meaner in my picture though :(

HOLOGRAPHIC MEMORY POWERS GO

I'm watching Kyle XY, which is apparently the perfect show for me because its part science, part drama, part horrible teen romantic comedy. I'm not proud of it, but I'm a girl. BUT, at one point Kyle discovers that he can go back into his memories, and see things that HE COULDN'T SEE BACK THEN. They don't explain it at all, but call it "Holographic Memory." My Theory: his magical brain records all the interference patterns (of light AND sound?) from the surrounding area. The key word here is "magical."
And yes, that paragraph is only there so I can have that as a title. Honestly, how else would I title things?

Some random stuff that didn't work out so great today:

Aaand something I just fooled around with today. Apparently I'm on a lion kick. It might have a little to do with the fact that, if it were possible to do without getting mauled, hugging a lion would be the fuzziest, cuddliest, best experience in the world. Um... I mean its probably because lions are SO COOL and RIP THINGS APART!

I've come to accept the fact that my window unit rockets various bugs and insects at near supersonic speeds into my face. As none of them seem to stick around once morning hits (vampire bugs?) I guess I don't have a problem with them hanging out at my place for the night... EXCEPT for Japanese Lady-bug-beetles. Those things can fall off a cliff and plunge to a fiery lady-bug death. (Or they can climb on the card stock I offer them, and take a ride back outdoors.) They're just annoying. And big. And mean. /end bug rant. (I'd put that in pseudo-html, but blogspot would just get confused...).

Self portrait for the day, I realized I always do them at night, so the light source is always the same... so I tried to mix up the colors a little bit. Clearly this depicts those brief, but beautiful moments in my day, when I just NEED to think about unicorns.
Thumbnails for a larger painting, after I did the lion yesterday, I kinda wanted to do something else with them (cause liek they're super cool) and its kind of morbid, but I thought of how they used to throw people into pits of lions in ye old Roman days. Picked the bottom right one.
Four hours in... eek. You can't tell yet but the dude is hanging on chains, OH NO!
And a t-shirt design for HVZ! Definitely going to do another one tomorrow (cause I think this ones a little boring?) but right now its do-something-besides-art-time.

The title is SUPER clever, trust me. Its quite a doozy. I'm pretty proud.
Honestly coming up with titles for blogs posts sucks a lot, since they're just pictures, and usually unrelated, and titling each post "More art" seems unnecessarily redundant.
AAAnyway... I didn't get as much done as I wanted to today :(
Landscape from imagination, I'd say I'm getting better... but outdoor environments are 500 bajillion and a half mega-tons easier to do than indoor ones, since they're all... organic-y and stuff.

Self portrait from last week? I look like I might have accidentally bashed my face several times into a tree, and then maybe lost the left side of my face to a rabid squirrel. But the smiley face says it all: I may appear miserable, but really, I'm very happy.
The only reason I put this is here was so I could make the title "Thatched Roof Cottages." Its very unfinished. And very bad. Its surprising how you can be so bad at drawing/painting just one thing just because you might have neglected to do it your entire life because its SO HAAARD. ...Considering doing a version which has been burninated... Also considering leaving the cottages in the background as mysterious cubes left by aliens. ...Definitely considering just deleting this.
Aaaaand regardless of the last two things sucking... LOOK PROGRESS! Not so much the tree, but the faces. The one on the left is from imagination, and the one in the middle is off of a photo. Apparently "flickr" is code on blogspot for "I didn't really want people to read the rest of this blog post".
I just realized they use picasa. That's very sneaky of them. Or perhaps its just a coincidence.

Flies and gnats and japanese lady-bug-posers and little green bugs and little long thin brown bugs and pseudo-lightning bugs and itty beetles. I have become familiar with every bug in the area just because of a little crack between my window unit and the window pane. Apparently the light in my bedroom is like a bug beacon, saying HEEEEYYYY... HEEY BUUUGS!!!... LOOK AT MEEEE, CAN'T YOU TELL ITS PARRRRTAAAAY TIIIIIMEEEE!?!?

Meteor Shower!

So I stayed up all night to watch the meteor shower... and of course all the meteors are obscured by clouds :( I saw at least 3 meteors though! But the better result of tonight was all the art I got done! And it wasn't for class! YAAAY! You can kind of see the progression of the night from perfectly normal to pretty much totally out of it. And I still have class until 2! :D (at least I'll make it on time to my 8:30 class for once?)

This first one was done earlier in the day/night. The whole day/night/morning I was messing around with different color combinations since that's something I haven't really messed with yet. This one was born out of some random shape thing. Even after I think it's done I'm still not sure what it is... haha.

This is the result of a Daily Sketch Group on ConceptArt.Org. The topic was something along the lines of an alien sort of camel.
This was the result of not knowing what to draw so I asked each of my roommates for a random word.

This is me being angry about the presence of clouds in front of the meteor shower :(
This was another Daily Sketch Group thing, the prompt was Kaya and her Crazy Dinosaur. I think its suitable strange. Especially since its mostly pink and purple :O

Anyway... Class is in exactly 2 hours now! :D Hooray! I'm not sure what to do until then... maybe draw some more. I'm getting kind of sleepy. :(

Henry Lerolle

Iiiiits October 3rd which means its Henry Lerolle's birthday, huzzah. I really like this piece, it almost feels like a photo but not in a bad way. In that cool, aging, overcast way. Also this one is cool, and I might reference it later for some sketching.

Just a quick update with all the digital stuff I've done since I moved into my house a while ago. Nothing too exciting, I also have some oil paintings for class that I've started, but I'll upload those once I dig out my camera from wherever it is.

Happy Birthday Jacque-Louis David! Hooray Neoclassicism and Napoleon Bonaparte! And also this other ridiculously famous painting, haha. I had never known what this painter's name was, nor that he had done all of these paintings. And I remember this one being in my latin book in high school. Its interesting how painters of the time bent the classics to say what they wanted to about their time.

A Daily Sketch Group I decided not to post... It's not that great, BUT it's acceptable for actually only doing it in an hour (getting better! yay!), the prompt was NOXENHARO, THE WANDERING BIOBOTIC THINKER'S-WARRIOR IN LONGCOAT. I went with a woman cause it seemed like there were a ton of male designs already. I sort of like how the fur turned out, and the combination of colors, but thats really about it. Also she's fairly proportional. Go me.

Ohhh, and I discovered "texturing" things. It seems to give things just a tad more of a professional looking edge.

I made a brush out of something I colored from a pretty pretty princess book, and tested it out a bit, and it ended up making some sort of crazy stunted hammerhead shark. Awwwwriiight.
Sooo, nothing too interesting, actually a lot of my energy is going into working on characters and stuff for an as yet un-named... and MYSTERIOUS project. Dundundunnnn. Some day I'll post it, I promise, haha. In other news, took the Andrew Jones CA Art of Beauty class today. And it was pretty fantastic, and pretty ridiculous to actually get to watch him make an entire piece. (Also it took nearly 6 hours, eeek). It was totally worth every dollar, though I won't be buying much until I get to school and get a job haha.

I'm really sort of liking his paintings too, especially this o ne. Oooo and this one too! They seem realistic in a different and more convincing way than a photo. Like he's captured the feeling of being a part of the scene rather than the scene being just an image.... *removes monocle, sets down glass of tea*. Quite.

Anyway, here's the work from yesterday. Hopefully I'll be able to whip out the camera at some point today and get some sketchbook pages up too.

Here's a painting done for my mom. She wanted a "cute, fat little bird."

And then a ton of lined sketches. I kind of raided flickr for interesting photos to practice painting, and made myself draw all of them before I could start painting (probably knowing i'd get frustrated at some point down the line with SOMEONES LIPS. GRRR.).
Ok. SRSLYWTF. I could NOT draw this girls mouth. See how I even left it out in the lineart? I tried like fifty bajillion times... and it was not gonna happen. It was all like... "I'm pouty and sticking out cause that's supposed to be hot or something", but every time I drew it, it was like... "I'm a massive underbite issue that's pretty dumb looking aktuly."

So honestly...? she looks a million times better with an angry cartoon mouth.

Sooo I totally got an Intuous4 yesterday, remembered this blog, and realized I hadn't updated in a while... (not that it really matters cause no one follows it... haha). But here's some pre-intuous4 stuff from this summer!

Here's a piece I've been working on since the beginning of this year. I really wanted to finish it for the Undergrad show at school, but sadly I'm apparently attempting to redefine the word lazy this year...

Here's a boxer, I think, (I don't remember his name, but I got the pictures from http://www.mmaphotography.com/ which OMG has a LOT of pictures of people fighting/wrestling or whatever it is) for some anatomy/painting practice. He has no eyes. He doesn't need them where he's going?... DIRE BABY FLAMINGO!!! DUNDUNDUNNNN!!!!... This is some strange bird I came up with while doodling some silhouettes (seen at the bottom of this post). Could it be the evil spawn of the Dire Flamingo? Perhaps. However any who have foolishly strayed into the nests of the Dire Flamingo have met a swift and painful death... so none are left who know its secrets...
Ok this one? I have no idea, honestly. This was another product of silhouette-ing. Its a combination of a lot of animals, and apparently a mailbox? At least that's what I think the red thing grafted to his butt seems to come from.
Aaaand the silhouettes themselves! You can hopefully see where I got the last two pieces from. I'm planning on developing the middle one and the upperleft corner one soon since they seem like interesting characters.

Life Drawing Homework

Yay quick update! I haven't been doing a ton of art lately that's been upload-able. (lolfortaking ceramics/life drawing) For this assignment in Life Drawing we were supposed to reproduce this picture by Degas. Our teacher is really cool about experimenting with different materials, so I asked her if I could do it in photoshop and she seemed interested in seeing what that would look so she let me try it.

Probably once this quarter is over I'll upload some of my life drawing stuff that's done in traditional media.

Wewt. Here're two value studies. One with a dark base, and one with a white base. I don't usually work from white, so it was an interesting (and difficult) experience, that ultimately ended when my frog was inexplicably moved, and I was too tired of it to actually make the effort and move it back (the 1 cm that it moved...).

Soon I have to start moving on to texture. Because that frog is definitely made out of wood IRL, when in the picture... it resembles the nicely polished porcelain of a toilet seat. Hurrah!

So I'm planning on actually updating this thing now. Whenever I do digital work I'll stick it up here, or whenever I happen to take a picture of traditional stuff for some reason. I think i'm going to throw in progress stuff up here too. Just 'cause!

Anywho:
Random person without a reference. First I did it in black and white to focus on the values, and then later I went back into it and added a little color. It actually helped a lot to do this sort of underpainting thing in photoshop. Usually when I had painted digitally before I went crazy-go-nuts with the colors and epic-failed on form and value. So this way I forced myself to get that stuff right before i added color. Since I think form and value kind of rank higher on the importance scale, anyway.

Eeeeek, sorry, I'm tired, and when I'm tired I think I talk way too much.
